Qualifications of an Orthopedic Trauma RN

• Active Idaho or multistate Registered Nurse licence or eligibility for state licensing assistance
• Registered Nurses practising under a multistate licence must establish Idaho residency within 60 days of hire
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
• NCLEX-RN successfully completed
• Recent acute-care, orthopedic, trauma, surgical or medical-surgical nursing experience preferred
• Current Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required at the time of hire
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support or Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification may be accepted in place of Basic Life Support
• Trauma Nursing Core Course certification is an asset
• Orthopedic Nurse Certification is an asset

Responsibilities of an Orthopedic Joint Trauma RN

• Provide professional nursing care to patients with complex orthopedic and traumatic injuries
• Complete and document comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments
• Perform focused orthopedic, neurovascular and mobility assessments
• Monitor patients recovering from orthopedic and joint procedures
• Recognize postoperative complications and initiate appropriate interventions
• Develop, implement and evaluate individualized nursing care plans
• Administer prescribed medications, IV therapies, blood products and treatments
• Evaluate patient responses to medications and clinical interventions
• Provide wound, incision, drain and external-fixation care as assigned
• Monitor casts, splints and orthopedic devices according to clinical protocols
• Assess circulation, sensation, movement and pain in affected extremities
• Recognize signs of compartment syndrome, bleeding, infection and other complications
• Provide pain-management interventions and evaluate their effectiveness
• Assist patients with safe positioning, mobility, transfers and activities of daily living
• Implement fall-prevention, pressure-injury prevention and patient-safety measures
• Collaborate with orthopedic surgeons, trauma professionals, nurses, pharmacists and rehabilitation teams
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and care planning
• Delegate appropriate responsibilities to qualified care-team members
