About the Behavioural Health RN Position
Registered Nurses on the Behavioural Health Unit provide professional nursing care to patients experiencing acute mental health, psychiatric and behavioural conditions.

Qualifications of a Behavioural Health RN
- Active Idaho or multistate Registered Nurse licence or eligibility for state licensing assistance
- Registered Nurses moving to Idaho from another compact state must apply for licensure by endorsement and update their primary state of residence within 60 days of hire
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
- NCLEX-RN successfully completed
- Recent behavioural health, psychiatric, mental health or acute-care nursing experience preferred
- Current Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required at the time of hire
- Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support or Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification may be accepted in place of Basic Life Support
- Additional unit-specific certifications may be required
- Crisis prevention, de-escalation or non-violent intervention training is an asset
- Canadian or Mexican citizenship required for candidates seeking TN visa assistance
- Strong physical and psychosocial assessment skills
- Effective therapeutic communication and crisis-intervention skills

Responsibilities of a Behavioural Health RN
- Provide professional nursing care to patients experiencing psychiatric and behavioural health conditions
- Complete and document comprehensive physical, mental health and psychosocial assessments
- Assess patients for suicide risk, self-harm, aggression and other safety concerns
- Develop, implement and evaluate individualized nursing care plans
- Monitor patients’ physical health, behaviour, mood and response to treatment
- Administer prescribed psychiatric and medical medications
- Evaluate medication effectiveness and monitor for adverse effects
- Recognize changes in patient condition and initiate appropriate interventions
- Use therapeutic communication to support patients experiencing distress or crisis
- Apply verbal de-escalation and crisis-intervention techniques
- Maintain a safe and therapeutic inpatient environment
