About the Trauma Medical-Surgical Unit

The 16-bed Trauma Medical-Surgical Unit provides nursing care to patients with varied medical conditions, traumatic injuries and postoperative needs.

The unit offers Registered Nurses exposure to increasingly complex cases while building clinical assessment, delegation, care coordination and leadership skills.

Patient populations may include individuals:

• Recovering from traumatic injuries
• Receiving postoperative surgical care
• Experiencing acute and chronic medical conditions
• Transitioning from higher-acuity hospital departments
• Requiring wound, drain or incision care
• Preparing for rehabilitation, discharge or continued treatment

Qualifications of a Trauma Medical-Surgical RN

• Active Idaho or multistate Registered Nurse licence or eligibility for state licensing assistance
• Registered Nurses practising under a multistate licence must establish Idaho residency within 60 days of hire
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
• NCLEX-RN successfully completed
• Recent acute-care, trauma, surgical or medical-surgical nursing experience preferred
• Current Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required at the time of hire
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support or Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification may be accepted in place of Basic Life Support
• Trauma Nursing Core Course certification is an asset
• Canadian or Mexican citizenship required for candidates seeking TN visa assistance
• Strong clinical assessment, organization and critical-thinking skills

Responsibilities of a Trauma Medical-Surgical RN

• Provide professional nursing care to trauma, medical and postoperative patients
• Complete and document comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments
• Develop, implement and evaluate individualized nursing care plans
• Monitor patient conditions and promptly communicate significant changes
• Recognize postoperative and trauma-related complications
• Administer prescribed medications, IV therapies, blood products and treatments
• Evaluate patient responses to medications and clinical interventions
• Provide wound, incision and drain care
• Monitor patients for bleeding, infection and other complications
• Provide pain-management interventions and evaluate their effectiveness
• Support respiratory care, mobility and postoperative complication prevention
• Assist patients with safe ambulation, transfers and activities of daily living
• Implement fall-prevention, pressure-injury prevention and patient-safety measures
• Collaborate with physicians, trauma professionals, nurses, pharmacists and rehabilitation teams
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and care planning
• Delegate appropriate responsibilities to qualified care-team members
• Educate patients and families about diagnoses, procedures, medications and recovery plans
• Promote patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual well-being
• Serve as a patient advocate throughout the hospital stay
• Coordinate discharge planning and transitions to rehabilitation or home care
• Maintain complete and accurate electronic health records
