About the Trauma General Surgery RN Position

The Trauma General Surgery Step-Down Unit provides nursing care across the full spectrum of acute surgical procedures and minor trauma cases.

Registered Nurses care for patients who require closer monitoring than a traditional medical-surgical unit but do not require intensive care. The unit provides valuable experience in postoperative nursing, trauma recovery, wound care and progressive patient monitoring.

Qualifications of a Trauma General Surgery RN

• Active Idaho or multistate Registered Nurse licence or eligibility for state licensing assistance
• Registered Nurses practising under a multistate licence must establish Idaho residency within 60 days of hire
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
• NCLEX-RN successfully completed
• Recent acute-care, surgical, trauma, medical-surgical or progressive care nursing experience preferred
• Current Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required at the time of hire
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support or Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification may be accepted in place of Basic Life Support
• Trauma Nursing Core Course certification is an asset
• Canadian or Mexican citizenship required for candidates seeking TN visa assistance
• Strong postoperative and trauma assessment skills
• Ability to recognize and respond promptly to changes in patient condition

Responsibilities of a Trauma General Surgery RN

• Provide professional nursing care to acute surgical and trauma patients
• Complete and document comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments
• Monitor patients recovering from surgical procedures and traumatic injuries
• Recognize postoperative complications and initiate appropriate interventions
• Develop, implement and evaluate individualized nursing care plans
• Administer prescribed medications, IV therapies, blood products and treatments
• Evaluate patient responses to medications and clinical interventions
• Provide wound, incision, drain and ostomy care as assigned
• Monitor surgical sites for bleeding, infection and other complications
• Provide pain-management interventions and evaluate their effectiveness
• Support respiratory care, mobility and postoperative complication prevention
• Assist patients with safe ambulation, transfers and activities of daily living
• Implement fall-prevention, infection-prevention and patient-safety measures
• Collaborate with surgeons, trauma professionals, nurses, pharmacists and rehabilitation teams
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and care planning
• Delegate appropriate responsibilities to qualified care-team members
