Qualifications of a Medical Oncology RN

  • Active Idaho or multistate Registered Nurse licence or eligibility for state licensing assistance
  • Registered Nurses practising under a multistate licence must establish Idaho residency within 60 days of hire
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • NCLEX-RN successfully completed
  • Recent acute-care, oncology, medical-surgical, telemetry or progressive care experience preferred
  • Current Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required at the time of hire
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support or Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification may be accepted in place of Basic Life Support
  • Additional unit-specific certifications may be required
  • Oncology nursing or chemotherapy and biotherapy certification is an asset when applicable to assigned responsibilities
  • Canadian or Mexican citizenship required for candidates seeking TN visa assistance
  • Strong assessment, organization and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to manage patients with complex medical and oncology needs
  • Strong patient-education, communication and documentation skills

Responsibilities of a Medical Oncology RN

  • Provide professional nursing care to adult and geriatric medical oncology patients
  • Care for patients with progressive and intermediate acuity needs
  • Complete and document comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments
  • Develop, implement and evaluate individualized nursing care plans
  • Monitor patient conditions and promptly communicate significant changes
  • Administer prescribed medications, IV therapies, blood products and treatments
  • Evaluate patient responses to medications and clinical interventions
  • Monitor laboratory results and report clinically significant findings
  • Assess and manage pain, nausea, fatigue and other treatment-related symptoms
  • Provide infection-prevention care for immunocompromised patients
  • Support patients receiving diagnostic testing and oncology treatments
  • Administer antineoplastic treatments when appropriately trained, certified and assigned
  • Recognize and respond to oncology-related complications and medical emergencies
  • Collaborate with physicians, oncology professionals, pharmacists and other clinical team members
  • Delegate appropriate responsibilities to qualified members of the care team
  • Educate patients and families about diagnoses, medications, treatments and symptom management
  • Provide compassionate emotional support to patients and families
  • Promote patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual well-being
  • Serve as a patient advocate throughout the hospital stay
  • Coordinate discharge planning and transitions to outpatient or community-based care
  • Maintain complete and accurate electronic health records
  • Use hospital equipment, resources and supplies responsibly
  • Follow infection-prevention practices, safety policies and professional nursing standards
  • Practise according to the requirements of the Idaho Board of Nursing

The Medical Oncology unit provides inpatient care to adults and older adults with cancer diagnoses, complex medical conditions and progressive or intermediate acuity needs.
