Qualifications of a Medical-Surgical RN

  • Active Oregon Registered Nurse licence required before starting employment
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • NCLEX-RN successfully completed
  • One year of recent acute-care nursing experience preferred
  • Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross or Military Training Network

Responsibilities of a Medical-Surgical RN

  • Provide professional nursing care to medical and surgical patients
  • Care for patients admitted through the Emergency Department
  • Complete and document comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments
  • Develop, implement and evaluate individualized nursing care plans
  • Monitor patient conditions and promptly communicate significant changes
  • Administer prescribed medications, IV therapies and treatments
  • Evaluate patient responses to medications and clinical interventions
  • Provide preoperative and postoperative nursing care
  • Perform wound care and monitor surgical incisions
  • Provide pain-management interventions and evaluate their effectiveness
  • Assist patients with mobility, transfers and activities of daily living
  • Implement fall-prevention and patient-safety measures
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, therapists and other clinical professionals
  • Delegate appropriate responsibilities to qualified members of the care team
  • Educate patients and families about diagnoses, medications, treatments and recovery plans
  • Promote patients’ physical, emotional and spiritual well-being
  • Serve as a patient advocate throughout the hospital stay
  • Coordinate discharge planning and safe transitions of care
  • Maintain complete and accurate electronic health records
  • Use hospital equipment, resources and supplies responsibly
  • Follow infection-prevention practices, safety policies and professional nursing standards
  • Practise according to the requirements of the Oregon State Board of Nursing
