Job Overview; Neuroscience or Neurological Unit RN
A Registered Nurse (RN) on the neuro unit provides specialised care to patients with neurological conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, spinal cord injury, neurodegenerative diseases (including Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis), and post-operative recovery from neurological procedures. Neuro RNs play a key role in monitoring changes in condition, administering treatments, and supporting patients and families through complex and often challenging healthcare situations.
Qualifications of Neuro RN
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license; state licensing assistance available
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
- NCLEX required for Canadian and Mexican RNs
- Current AHA BLS or Red Cross BLS certification required upon hire
- At least one year of previous clinical experience preferred
Responsibilities and Duties of a Neuro RN
- Provide specialised neuro patient care using assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Monitor and assess neurological status; identify and respond to changes quickly
- Deliver safe, evidence-based nursing care aligned with hospital policy and Joint Commission standards
- Administer medications and treatments related to neurological conditions and recovery
- Collaborate with neurologists, neurosurgeons, rehab teams, and interdisciplinary staff
- Educate patients and families on stroke recovery, neuro conditions, and post-surgical care plans
- Document accurately and communicate effectively to support patient outcomes
