Big news for Canadian and Mexican nurses looking to work in the U.S.: CGFNS International—the organization that evaluates your credentials for VisaScreen certification—has decided to rebrand itself as TruMerit™. If you’ve ever stumbled over “CGFNS” (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools, for those who never bothered to look it up), then this change is probably a welcome one.
What’s Changing?
Aside from the new name, not much. TruMerit will still be the go-to organization for verifying your education, experience, and qualifications so you can get your TN visa and work in the U.S. The name change comes as part of a bigger effort to focus on global healthcare workforce development and advocacy.
What This Means for Canadian and Mexican Nurses
- Same Process, New Name – If you’re in the middle of a VisaScreen application, don’t panic. Everything is still running as usual—just with a less complicated name attached.
- Easier Conversations – Instead of explaining what CGFNS stands for (and getting blank stares), you can now just say “TruMerit.” It rolls off the tongue way easier.
- More Visibility – With the rebrand, TruMerit is emphasizing advocacy and global healthcare workforce improvements, which could mean even more recognition for internationally educated nurses in the future.
The full transition will roll out between March and summer 2025, so expect to see new logos, a redesigned website, and updated certificates. But the core mission stays the same: helping internationally trained nurses (like you!) navigate the U.S. licensing and visa process.
